Six area high school students have been selected to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.
The international competition will be in Pittsburgh from May 13 through 18. The six students, along with three middle-school observers, were selected as the top winners at the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair, held at the Tucson Convention Center earlier this month.
More than 6,000 students competed in the Southern Arizona event.
The top students advancing to the international science fair are:
• Stanley Palasek of the Sonoran Science Academy-Tucson.
• Ostin Zarse of Tucson High Magnet School.
• Cory Owan of Catalina Foothills High School.
• Arne Joi Nipales and Jacquel Rivers (team project) of Baboquivari High School.
• Stephen Yao of University High School.
Going as observers are:
• Paulina Gonzalez and Robyn Almano of Immaculate Heart Middle School.
• Chelsea West of Sonoran Science Academy Middle School-Davis Monthan.
The Intel event is the world's largest international pre-college science competition.
Students from 65 countries, regions and territories will display their independent research and compete for more than $4 million in awards and prizes.
