10 Presidential Scholar candidates are named
Ten Tucson-area students have been named candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars program.
The scholars program was established to recognize some of the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors.
The local candidates for 2013 are: Erica Schwarz of Sahuarita High School; Maren Bailey, Kendra Knittel and James Miscione of University High School; Amanda Bohnert of Salpointe Catholic High School; Lauren Courtney and Juliet Wilhelm of Catalina Foothills High School; Kirk Hendricks and Alden McCollum of Basis Tucson; and Joshua Sloane of Sonoran Science Academy.
Semifinalists will be notified in April, and scholars will be notified in May.
Each year, up to 141 students are named Presidential Scholars. Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in June and the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House.
McTeacher's Night event raises $3,800
A new McDonald's location has raised $3,800 for local schools as part of its grand opening celebration.
The restaurant, at 2130 W. River Road, hosted a McTeacher's Night Challenge, fundraising for Flowing Wells Junior High, Laguna Elementary, Carden of Tucson Charter School, Donaldson Elementary, Sonoran Science Academy and La Cima Middle School.
As part of the event, a portion of McDonald's sales during a two-hour period benefited each school. The school's principal and teachers worked at the restaurant greeting customers and manning the registers.
Families of students and local school supporters visited the McDonald's, owned by Travis Heriaud, and tipped the teachers.
Flowing Wells Junior High won the challenge, raising the most money and taking home a $1,000 prize.
Nominations sought for top crossing guard
AAA Arizona is seeking nominations for the third annual Crossing Guard of the Year Award.
Nominees will be selected based on dedication, friendliness, professionalism and safety.
One person from Pima County who best demonstrates the procedures and responsibilities in AAA's handbook for adult crossing guards will be awarded the honor.
The winner will be announced on Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, April 26. He or she will receive a plaque and a $100 Target gift card.
To nominate a crossing guard, go to www.aaa.com/trafficsafety and click on the "child safety" tab and download the form.
Nomination forms are also available at all Pima County school district offices.
The deadline is March 12.
Geico joins in giving special-needs funds
Geico has partnered with the Arizona Leadership Foundation to fund $1 million in scholarships for students with specialized needs.
The scholarships are for students attending Intermountain Academy, which accepts K-12 students referred from Tucson-area school districts with special behavioral and social skills needs.
The award will allow the academy to increase the number of students served.
Intermountain, previously the Nellie P. Covert School, is a private school that averages 38 students per year.
