Mtn. View team wins state design contest
A team of Mountain View High School students will be competing in the national Real World Design Challenge.
The students - Charlotte Mitchell, Issac Hermosillo, Taylor Parra, Sade Nabahe, David Ogden and Anthony Del Castillo - won the state competition and will represent Arizona in Washington, D.C., in April.
This is the second year that Arizona has participated in the design competition, which works to increase the science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce.
Students are challenged to solve a real problem in aeronautical engineering.
The Mountain View team went up against nearly two dozen other schools. In the finals, it will compete against winning teams from more than 30 states and territories.
UHS student receives EF Global scholarship
A University High School sophomore has been selected to receive the EF Global Citizen Scholarship.
Lena Blackmon is one of 10 high school students picked from hundreds of applicants for the program, which is designed to unite students from around the world by breaking down barriers of culture, language and geography while developing global awareness, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
As part of the scholarship, Blackmon earned a free trip to Costa Rica in April for EF's Global Student Leaders Summit.
She will also take part in a 10-day educational tour of Costa Rica's diverse ecosystems, while studying the country's environmental policy initiatives.
Drachman principal to receive MVP award
The leader of Drachman Montessori Magnet School is being honored with the Most Valuable Principal award Sunday.
In addition to serving as principal, Jesus Celaya is coaching four basketball teams - girls, boys, coed and the 4-6 grade squads. He also coaches flag football, cross country, track and field, softball, volleyball and soccer.
Celaya is being recognized by the Roskruge Cougar Classic, a basketball tournament that has been held for the last three decades.
Today, more than 45 teams participate in three weekends of play at multiple sites.
The awards banquet will be at Tucson High Magnet School, 400 N. Second Ave., at 3 p.m.
The keynote speaker is former Major League pitcher Ed Vosberg.
