Tuition is poised to rise again at Pima Community College, possibly to help pay for another round of raises for PCC personnel.

The school's finance boss is proposing tuition rate increases of between 4.4 percent and 7.4 percent in a trio of options to be voted on at tonight's PCC Governing Board meeting.

Finance Director David Bea said in a report that the tuition hikes would add between $1.8 million and $2.4 million to the college's coffers next school year.

The extra money would help cover higher costs for items such as retirement contributions and employee health benefits and a possible "salary pool increase" Bea first proposed to the board in a preliminary report in January.

The amount of the possible pay hikes has not yet been disclosed. PCC personnel received increases of 3.5 percent this school year, more generous than many other public agencies.

The college's tuition rates rose by about 8 percent this year.

Bea's proposals for next school year include:

• A $2-per-credit-hour increase to in-state tuition rates, bringing the cost of base tuition to $1,965 a year for a full-time student taking 30 credits annually. That's about $60 more than this year.

•A $3 increase per credit hour for a base tuition cost of $1,995 a year - about $90 more - for full-time students.

• A $4 increase per credit hour or $120 more a year for a full-time student, bringing base tuition to $2,025.

Similar changes were proposed for out-of-state tuition rates.

Bea also is proposing a 50-cent-per-credit-hour increase to student services fees and possibly to technology fees.

Even with another increase, PCC's tuition rates will be among the lowest in the state, Bea said.
