Pima Community College's new provost may be moving from the Sun Belt to the Snow Belt after less than a year on the job in Tucson.
Jerry Migler, who started at PCC on Aug. 1, has been named a semifinalist for the president's job at tiny Lake Region State College in the farm town of Devil's Lake, N.D.
Devil's Lake, in the northeastern part of the state, has a population of about 7,000. The college there has about 2,000 students, a fraction of the 30,000 or so at PCC.
Migler came to PCC from a small college in Minnesota after a national search.
He's one of four semifinalists to be interviewed in North Dakota next Wednesday, according to that school's website.
Migler's application letter for the new job is dated Jan. 17, the same day he and other PCC administrators were due to meet in Tucson with investigators from the Chicago-based Higher Learning Commission, PCC's accreditor.
The accreditor is looking into numerous complaints from the public and PCC insiders about the college's personnel and procurement practices, problems that unfolded before Migler arrived.
Investigators are expected to issue a report on their findings in the near future.
Migler said Thursday that the investigation had nothing to do with his decision to apply for another job.
He said he's looking to move to be closer to his aging in-laws, who may need help with health problems.
He doesn't plan on applying for any other jobs if the one in North Dakota falls through, he said. In that case, he and his wife will be content to stay in Tucson.
"If it doesn't work out, we love Tucson and I love my job," he said.
