One of two finalists for the chancellorship of Pima Community College withdrew today, one day after the head of the college’s governing board told employees that “concerns that have arisen regarding one of the finalists.”
Maria Sheehan, president of Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno, Nev., took herself out of the running for PCC’s top job a few days after the Arizona Daily Star began an investigation into her background.
Sheehan told the Star earlier this week she wasn’t aware of the problems involving inflated enrollment figures that began while she was president of a California college during the 2003-04 school year and continued for four years under her leadership. That college is having to repay millions in funds back to the state of California.
Brenda Even, chair of PCC’s goverining board, told employees in a Jan. 31 email that the chancellor search now is on hold, and said the board will meet on Feb. 5 to decide its next steps.
Sheehan’s withdrawal means the college now is down to one finalist — Terrence Burgess, the president of San Diego City College.
A third finalist named by PCC, Katharine Winograd, president of Central New Mexico Community College, dropped out just before the college announced finalists at a meeting on Jan. 24.
