The Southern Arizona Women's Chorus will present "A Retro Christmas," a nostalgic musical trip through songs of the 1940s and '50s, in a concert Tuesday evening at Academy Village.
The group will sing old favorites such as "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
The chorus has about 65 members ranging in age from 18 to 95. For this concert, about 25 members will perform under the direction of Terrie Ashbaugh.
The women's chorus was founded in 1981 as a project for a University of Arizona graduate student.
Ashbaugh has been musical director since 1998, and under her tenure what was a small singing club has expanded to a large, community-based organization. The assistant director and accompanist is Stacey Seaman.
The women's chorus performs from a growing repertoire of music written specifically for treble voices.
In addition to their holiday concert at Academy Village, the chorus will host a national Women's Chorus Festival on April 20. One hundred voices will perform "Women in Song," a varied program of music that will include pieces the local chorus has commissioned over the years, some never before performed in concert.
Sponsored by Arizona Senior Academy, the holiday concert is open to the public free of charge. It begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Arizona Senior Academy Building, 13715 E. Langtry Lane.
Academy Village is an active-adult community located off Old Spanish Trail. Due to the popularity of Arizona Senior Academy events and limited seating, non-members are encouraged to make reservations.
