The clarinet will be the featured instrument when Ashley Knecht performs a lunchtime concert Tuesday at the Arizona Senior Academy.
The instrument, which has been around for nearly 300 years, is the well-known "licorice stick" that Benny Goodman and others made popular during the Jazz Era of the 1930s and '40s. It remains a respected solo, ensemble and orchestral musical instrument.
Knecht, from Pelican Rapids, Minn., is a graduate student at the University of Arizona. She studied at Minnesota State University in Moorhead, where she was principal clarinetist with the University Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. She is working on her master's degree in clarinet performance.
Knecht's program next week features works by Robert Schumann, the "Sonatina for Clarinet" by Miklós Rózsa, the "Sona-tine" by Pierre Gabaye and Aaron Copland's "Clarinet Concerto." She will be accompanied on the piano by Woan Ching Lim.
The Arizona Senior Academy is on the campus of Academy Village, an active-adult community located off Old Spanish Trail six miles southeast of Saguaro National Park East.
Lunch after the performance is available in the Academy Cafe across the plaza from the Academy Building.
