Abundant runoff from monsoon rains has begun refilling the Deep Pond at Pima County’s Kino Environmental Restoration Project on Forgeus Avenue about a block north of Ajo Way.
The three-acre pond was drained earlier this year for maintenance and removal of bullfrogs and other non-native species. Plans called for allowing the pond to refill naturally with storm runoff during the monsoon — and so far nature is cooperating.
County officials said the Julian Watershed, which feeds water into the pond, received 2 to 2.6 inches of rainfall earlier this month.
Forecasts call for more rain in the Tucson area this week.
That’s good news for bird-watchers who find egrets, herons and other bird species at the pond depending on the season.
