A Tucson police officer and a suspected bank robber were bitten by dogs during a chase through midtown Wednesday afternoon.

A 911 call came in just before noon reporting an armed robbery at the Bank of the West, 3175 N. Swan Road, near East Camp Lowell Road, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, spokesman for the Tucson Police Department.

A man entered the bank with a handgun, demanded money and left on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

A TPD officer saw a vehicle in the area he believed was linked to the robbery. The officer chased the car until they reached an alley just west of East 27th Street and South Curtis Avenue. Widmer could not immediately say what brought the suspect vehicle to the officer’s attention.

Two men were in the vehicle. One was detained, but the other ran from officers. During a foot chase through yards in a nearby neighborhood, one officer was attacked by a pitbull and another officer shot the dog, Widmer said. The dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic for treatment.

Officers tracked the man, who was barefoot, to the backyard of a home in the 1500 block of East 28th Street. The man was arrested after he was bitten by one of the police K-9s, Widmer said.

The story continues to develop.
