A 49-year-old mother was arrested and faces attempted first-degree murder and child abuse charges for choking her son with a cord, police said.

Jean Cataline was booked into the Pima County jail Wednesday evening, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

A woman called 911 shortly after 10 a.m. to report she tried to kill her 10-year-old son by wrapping a cord around his neck, Widmer said.

Tucson Fire Department paramedics treated the boy at an apartment complex, 2720 N. Swan Road, near East Glenn Street, before rushing him to University of Arizona Medical Center, authorities said.

The boy was in critical condition, said Widmer.

He said he could not elaborate on what investigators found. A search warrant was obtained for the woman’s apartment, Widmer said.

He said the woman’s other son, age 17, was placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

The father of the boys died recently, Widmer said.
