A 17-year-old boy with a gun was shot Sunday during a confrontation with a Tucson police officer on the city's south side.

The teen remains hospitalized with wounds that are not life-threatening. The officer, Jesus Arriola, was uninjured.

The incident began at about 6:30 a.m. when police were dispatched to a home in the 5600 block of South Abbottsford Drive, in the Midvale Park neighborhood between West Irvington and West Valencia roads.

A woman called 911 after she said someone repeatedly rang her doorbell without identifying themselves, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

Two officers questioned two people walking nearby. During questioning, the teen ran, Widmer said.

Officer Arriola chased the teen into the backyard of a house.

Arriola said the teen had his hands by his wasteband, and Arriola tased the teen, Widmer said.

The teen revealed a handgun and Arriola fired several times, striking the teen. The teen escaped over a wall, and officers recovered a handgun, Widmer said.

An hour later, a hospital notified police that a teen arrived with a gunshot injury. Police confirmed it was the same teen, said Widmer.

Charges against the teen, whose name was not released, are pending. The other man, age 20, was questioned and released, Widmer said.

Arriola, a five-year TPD veteran, was placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Internal affairs is conducting an administrative investigation to determine if proper procedures were followed.
