A 17-year-old boy was shot early today during a confrontation with a Tucson police officer on the city's south side.
The teen remains hospitalized with wounds that are not life-threatening. The officer was uninjured.
The incident started about 6:30 a.m. when police responded to a 911 call from a home in the 5600 block of South Abbottsford Drive, in the Midvale Park neighborhood between West Irvington and West Valencia roads.
A woman called 911 after she says someone kept ringing her doorbell but would not respond when she asked who it was, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a TPD spokesman.
Two officers were leaving the house when the saw two men walking nearby. When the officers approached the pair split, as did the officers.
One officer chased the teen into the backyard of a home where there was a confrontation and police say the teen produced a handgun.
The officer fired and struck the teen, who hopped over a wall a escaped, Widmer said.
About an hour later police were notified by a hospital that a teen had arrived with gunshot wounds. Police confirmed later it was the same teen in the confrontation.
The teen and his companion, a 20-year-old man, were still being questioned by police this afternoon. The investigation continues.
