A Tucson man was killed Friday morning when a single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near Ryan Airfield.

Pilot Terril Edward "Ted" Wilson, 75, was flying the Piper 152 but was not the owner of the plane, said Deputy Tom Peine, spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff's Department.

Multiple calls came in to 911 operators at about 9:30 a.m. reporting the plane crash in a desert area near West Ajo Highway and South Postvale Road about 10 miles southwest of Tucson, Peine said.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are traveling to Tucson from Los Angeles to investigate the incident.

No further details were available late Friday.
