Tucson firefighters rescued two people from a north-side storm drain Saturday morning, authorities said.

The fire department received report at about 10:30 a.m. of two people trapped in the storm drain near North Stone Avenue and East Wetmore Road, a Tucson Fire Department news release said. Pima County Wastewater was notified.

A man and woman in their 30s entered the storm drain from the nearby Rillito River, but became disoriented and couldn't get out. Rescuers used a circular saw to cut a metal security bar on a gate blocking the drain.

The two were in the drain for about eight hours. Both were taken to a local hospital with signs of heat-related illness.
