A 35-year-old Pima County man who admitted he stabbed his father to death was sentenced to 10 1/2 years in prison Monday.

Brian Gene Harmon pleaded guilty to manslaughter in January and had been facing between seven and 21 years in prison.

On Jan. 1, 2010, a witness told Pima County Sheriff’s deputies that Brian Harmon and Phillip Harmon, 56, argued and Phillip Harmon followed his son outside with a wrench.

The witness heard thumping noises and then Brian Harmon came back into the house and said he’d killed his father.

Deputies found a broken golf club near Phillip Harmon’s body and an autopsy revealed he’d been struck 11 times with an object and stabbed three times.

The younger Harmon hit his father with the golf club and when it broke, stabbed him in the abdomen with it, Assistant Pima County Public Defender John O'Brien told the judge in January.

Both men were under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the offense, Pima County Superior Court Judge Paul Tang noted Monday.
