The man killed in Tuesday’s pile up caused by a dust storm that swept across Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak has been identified.
Joseph Tatsch, 66, from Austin, Texas was in the passenger seat in a Honda car driven by his wife, Paula Fry Tatsch, 65, Department of Public Safety officials said.
The couple’s car collided with a tractor trailer in the westbound lanes, sliding under the rear of the semi.
Paula Fry Tatsch was critically injured in the crash, said Patrick Calhoun, a spokesman for Avra Valley fire.
It took 45 minutes to hook up winches to the vehicle, pull it out and then cut the woman out of the car, Calhoun said.
The dust storm caused two accidents on westbound I-10 northwest of Tucson involving 16 vehicles and injuring about 15 people. A third wreck happened on eastbound I-10 near McCartney Road involving eight vehicles and injuring two people.
Both directions of travel on I-10 were shut down for several hours.
