A 10-year-old boy playing with matches Sunday started a brush fire in a wash area near Continental Ranch that covered three acres, authorities said.
Shortly after noon, Northwest Fire District firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire in a wash area, just off the Santa Cruz River west of Interstate 10 near West Twin Peaks Road, said Capt. Adam Goldberg, a Northwest Fire spokesman.
It took 28 firefighers two hours to bring the fire under control, Goldberg said. It was fanned by wind. No one was injured, he said.
The boy, who lit the brush, tried to put the fire out with a water bottle. He then ran for help and found a woman walking her dog who called 911, Goldberg said.
The boy was arrested and cited for reckless burning and released to his parents, said Sgt. Jose Alvarez, a Marana Police Department spokesman.
The child's parents referred their son to Northwest Fire District's Juvenile Firesetter Program, which teaches children the consequences of their actions and about fire danger, Goldberg said.
