SAN SIMON - Authorities in Southern Arizona are trying to determine if a man who fatally shot himself is connected to criminal activity in the Tucson area.

The 54-year-old man is either from California or Canada, and authorities are withholding his name until relatives can be notified, Cochise County sheriff's officials said.

A deputy on patrol Thursday in the San Simon area spotted what appeared to be an abandoned vehicle off an Interstate 10 frontage road. The deputy approached the vehicle, which had Canadian license plates, and saw a man in the driver's seat. The man sped off when asked for identification and later stopped and fatally shot himself.

Authorities searched the vehicle and found firearms, ammunition, cash, a ski mask, binoculars, gloves, a wig and makeup.
