A Pima County sheriff’s deputy fired two shots in an encounter with a man who pointed what appeared to be a rifle at him Friday morning, the department said.

Cody Salzman, 21, was not hit or injured, and it was later determined that he was wielding a wooden rifle stock without a barrel, said department spokesman Deputy Tom Peine.

Peine said in a news release that Deputy Chance Kennedy responded to a reported domestic dispute in the 6200 block of North Van Ark Road and encountered Salzman.

After Salzman pointed the rifle stock and Kennedy fired two shots, Salzman surrendered, Peine said.

He said Salzman was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a peace officer.
