A 62-year-old man was killed Sunday night when he was struck by a train as it approached the Tucson Amtrak station.

Charles Heffington was pronounced dead at the scene, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

The train was headed west approaching the downtown station at 400 N. Toole Ave. at 9:40 p.m. when crew members saw a man lying down or sitting on the outside of the track.

The engineer immediately used the emergency brake and sounded the horn but was unable to avoid hitting the man, Widmer said.
