Two brothers — one now in custody — are suspects in burglaries of an Oro Valley self-storage facility in which more than $60,000 in items were stolen, authorities said Thursday.

Elmer Upchurch, 27, was arrested at a local pawnshop by a state Department of Public Safety gang task force on unrelated charges, said Lt. Kara Riley, an Oro Valley Police Department spokeswoman.

Oro Valley police began an investigation Dec. 28, after they were dispatched to Arizona Self Storage, 10880 N. Mavinee Drive, to a report of several burglarized storage facilities, said Riley.

Oro Valley police and DPS gang task force investigators began working the case jointly after it was learned that Upchurch and his brother, Jack Upchurch, 28, were suspects, Riley said. The brothers have ties to gangs, she said.

Investigators served a search warrant and recovered stolen property in the 13000 block of North Lon Adams Road in Marana, Riley said.

Elmer Upchurch will face felony theft in excess of $20,000, three counts of third degree burglary and trafficking in stolen property, said Riley.

Jack Upchurch, who has a history of violence, is wanted for questioning in the case, said Riley.

Jack Upchurch has brown hair and blue eyes. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 140 pounds. He may have recently shaved his head, said Riley.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
