A man on a motorcycle who fled from officers is in custody after being shot by Bisbee police Tuesday night, authorities said .
The officer-involved shooting took place Tuesday night in the Naco area near the U.S.-Mexico border. Earlier Tuesday, a Border Patrol agent was shot to death and another wounded in the same area.
The situation began when Bisbee police tried to pull over a man riding a motorcycle on Naco Highway, Cochise County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Carol Capas said.
Bisbee officers knew there was an order of protection taken out by a woman against the man, who was reportedly trying to make contact with the woman at the time, Capas said. The woman called police saying the man was following her on a motorcycle.
Officers saw the man following the woman and attempted to make a traffic stop.
The motorcycle rider sped away at a high rate of speed, Capas said. At one point the motorcycle rider turned around on a road and drove back toward Bisbee officers, who were stopped on the road. At that point an officer fired two times at the motorcyclist.
The man then drove off, but a short time later abandoned the motorcycle and ran to a home in Naco, Capas said. A resident of the home called 911 about the injured man. Bisbee police identified the man as the motorcyclist.
The man was treated and released from a Tucson hospital. Charges are pending against him, Capas said. Additional information makes no mention of the man firing at police officers.
Several agencies are investigating the shooting.
