A Mexican man was arrested Tuesday at a Nogales port of entry for attempting to smuggle more than a ton of marijuana into the United States, officials said.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Mariposa Port of Entry sent a tractor-trailer rig, driven by a 35-year-old man, for an additional inspection.
The rig was X-rayed, and a CBP dog detected drugs in a shipment of bell peppers, according to a news release from the agency. A search led to the discovery of 280 packages of marijuana in boxes of peppers. The drugs were worth slightly more than $1 million.
The drugs and rig were seized. The driver was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
