Arrest made in fatal Irvington hit-run

Police said they arrested the driver in a fatal Friday night hit-and-run.

Rebecca Lanette Valenzuela was driving the white van that hit 29-year-old Angelic Monica Barnes, the Tucson Police Department said in a news release.

Just before 11 p.m. Friday, Barnes was walking south across East Irvington Road just west of South Fremont Avenue. She was not in a crosswalk. Valenzuela, 18, was driving a 2004 Ford Freestar van eastbound on Irvington Road when her vehicle struck Barnes. Two others were in the van, too, police said.

Valenzuela panicked and fled, the release stated.

A family member noticed damage to the van and called police on Saturday morning.

Driver killed, 11 hurt in Interstate 10 crash

A New Mexico woman was killed and 11 of her passengers were injured Saturday morning when their minivan rolled on Interstate 10.

The van was eastbound at Milepost 219 near Picacho Peak about 7:30 a.m. when the tread on a rear tire separated and caused the van to swerve into the median.

The van rolled and ejected several people, including the driver, a 28-year-old woman from Silver City, according to Avra Valley Fire District spokesman Patrick Calhoun, and an Arizona Department of Public Safety official.

None of those in the van, who ranged in age from infancy to adult, was wearing a seatbelt, the DPS official said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Calhoun said, and three passengers had life-threatening injuries. One was taken by ambulance to a Tucson-area hospital, and two others were taken by helicopter.

The other eight victims suffered less serious injuries and were taken to a hospital in stable condition, Calhoun said.

Nine of the passengers in the minivan were under the age of 12, Calhoun said. The driver and all of the passengers were related.

They found the 77-year-old man face-down in a pond in his backyard and tried to revive him but couldn't, Seeley said.
