A man suspected of drinking and driving is in critical condition and several others were injured in a crash Sunday night on Tucson’s southwest side, authorities said.

The 47-year-old man was driving east on Valencia Road near Mark Road, shortly before 9 p.m., when he hit a vehicle headed the same direction, then skidded and hit another vehicle traveling west, Deputy Tom Peine, a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said in a news release.

The man then hit another car, with six occupants, head on.

A 72-year-old woman driving the car that was hit and the front seat passenger have serious injuries but are in stable condition, the release said.

The other four passengers had minor injuries. The man, who caused the crash, has life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives believe alcohol is a factor in the crash, the release said.
