A suspect has been arrested in a sexual assault that occurred 13 years ago in Tucson.
Ramon G. Trujillo, 45, was booked into the Pima County jail Wednesday after being accused in the August 2000 south-side attack, Sgt. Maria Hawke, spokeswoman for the Tucson Police Department, said in a news release.
The victim was taking a late-night walk near South Sixth Avenue and Interstate 10 when she was attacked. She was hit from behind, knocked to the ground and assaulted, Hawke said.
Male DNA was recovered after the attack and investigators entered it into CODIS - the FBI's Combined DNA Index System - but no matches were found, Hawke said.
In 2005, TPD was notified "that the same male DNA profile had been associated to a sexual assault case from Phoenix, but the source of the DNA remained unidentified," Hawke said.
In April, however, TPD learned that CODIS had a match and that a suspect had been identified.
Trujillo is facing one count of sexual assault in connection with the Tucson attack.
