A woman and her husband were indicted on fraud and theft charges after they were accused of stealing money from a Pima County vocational program for high school students.
Investigators said Melinda and Enrique Carpio embezzled about $300,000 from the Pima County Joint Technical Education District during a three-year period, according to an Arizona Attorney General's Office news release.
Melinda Carpio was the accounting services manager for JTED.
The Pima County Sheriff's Department began investigating the couple after the chief financial officer at JTED reported a discrepancy between an expenditure and an accompanying vendor payment.
Investigators claimed Carpio had directed payments to her husband, who received the money using the names of fictitious vendors.
The money was deposited into a bank account shared by the suspects.
Carpio was fired from JTED before the case was referred to the Attorney General's Office.
