The man arrested for shooting U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others in Tucson last month has been moved from Phoenix to the federal prison in Tucson.
Jared Lee Loughner has been moved to the maximum security U.S. Penitentiary at the Federal Correctional Complex, 9300 S. Wilmot Road, according to online prison records.
Loughner was transferred Thursday to the prison because he will make an appearance March 9 in federal court in Tucson, said Chris DeRosa, a U.S. Marshals Service spokesman.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona has said it will issue a final indictment against Loughner, 22, by March 9.
Loughner is charged with trying to assassinate Giffords and attempting to kill two of her aides Jan. 8.
A new indictment is expected to also charge him with the murders of U.S. District Judge John Roll and Giffords aide Gabe Zimmerman. Loughner has pleaded not guilty.
State charges are also likely. Four others died and 12 others were shot outside the northwest-side Safeway.
