Hate speech was written inside dozens of books at the University of Arizona earlier this month, UA officials said.
More than 50 books had hateful remarks toward religion, race, and sexual orientation, said Sgt. Juan Alvarez, a spokesman for UA police.
The report was made Nov. 17, after library staff conducted a routine inventory and found some of these books, Alvarez said. But the timeline for when the vandalism took place is unknown.
Some books had writing on five pages, others had hate-speech in more than 100 pages, Alvarez said.
Library staff estimated the damage at $8,745 based on the $165 fee they charge when people return a damaged book, Alvarez said.
UA police have no suspects.
