Charges against University of Arizona running back Ka’Deem Carey stemming from a December domestic violence incident involving his pregnant ex-girlfriend will be filed later this week, Tucson police said.

Officers responded to a domestic violence situation at a residence in the 2000 block of East Copper Street on the afternoon of Dec. 23 involving Carey and a woman, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson police spokesman.

Carey, 20, was gone when police arrived, but returned a short time later and spoke with the officers, Widmer said.

Both Carey and the woman “showed injuries consistent with some type of physical altercation,” Widmer said.

Police took statements from both Carey and the woman and they were separated.

The case was passed on to domestic violence detectives who turned the case to Tucson City Court for review.

The City Prosecutor and detectives made a decision to file charges against Carey, Widmer said.

“Mr. Carey has been contacted and advised that he is going to be charged and is going to be showing up to City Court voluntarily later this week to face his charges,” Widmer said.

An order of protection was requested by the woman against Carey on Dec. 26. Carey was served with the order on Dec. 31.

In the petition for the order of protection, the 23-year-old woman wrote that he came into a room looking for a lighter to smoke an illegal substance.

She wrote that she asked Carey to leave several times and he pushed and shoved his way into the room and knocked her to the floor and slammed her fingers in the door.

The woman is pregnant with Carey’s child, she indicated in her petition for the order of protection. The Star is not naming the woman because she is not being charged.

Carey filed a petition for an order of protection against the woman and an injunction against harassment against the woman’s mother on Dec. 26. He asked the court to dismiss the requests at a hearing Monday morning.

Neither the City Prosecutor nor Carey’s attorney could comment on the nature of the charges.
