Rain is on the way — and higher mountains likely will be capped with snow.

“For tonight, there’s a 100 percent chance of rain” in the Tucson area — beginning in the evening and becoming more widespread around midnight, said Jeff Davis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “It’s likely that the rain will continue through the early-morning hours Friday and taper off by mid-morning, with some spotty showers Friday afternoon.”

Snow levels in the mountains are expected to drop to about 5,000 feet.

Cloud cover will prevent temperatures from plummeting, Davis said.

The low tonight is expected to be 49. The high Friday will be 58, with a low of 43 on Friday night.

Much of northern and eastern Arizona is under winter storm advisories or warnings, the Weather Service reported. Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff and parts of Interstate 40 will be slick and snow-covered, and back country roads might become impassable.

Another storm is expected to move into the state late Friday and into Saturday — bringing a 50 percent chance of rain in Tucson on Saturday.

“Mount Lemmon will probably see snow” from that storm, Davis said.

The high Saturday will be about 57 degrees.

No rain is in the forecast for Sunday or Monday, and temperatures will gradually warm into the 60s next week, Davis said.
