Dozens of people took the oath of allegiance and became United States citizens Friday during a ceremony in Tucson.

It was part of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services commemoration of the nation's 235th birthday during which more than 24,000 new citizens were naturalized in ceremonies across the country in the week leading up to the Fourth of July.

On Friday 200 members of the military were naturalized aboard the USS Midway in San Diego. Members of the U.S. armed forces also took the U.S. Oath of Allegiance at all-military ceremonies in Baghdad, Kabul, and Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.

The new citizens welcomed in Tucson came from: Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, Mexico, Nigeria, Philippines, Togo, Vietnam, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Chile, Iran, Peru and Thailand.
