Tucson firefighters rescued two people from a north-side storm drain Saturday morning, authorities said.

The fire department received a 911 call at about 10:30 a.m. reporting two people trapped in the storm drain near North Stone Avenue and East Wetmore Road, according to a Tucson Fire Department news release.

Pima County Wastewater was also notified of the incident.

The people, a man and woman in their 30s, entered the storm drain from the nearby Rillito River, but became disoriented and couldn’t get out.

Rescuers had to use a circular saw to cut a metal security bar on a gate blocking the storm drain.

The two were in the drain for about eight hours. Both were taken to a local hospital after they showed signs of heat-related illness.
