Doctors upgraded U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' condition from critical to serious Sunday, one day after she was removed from a ventilator.

She continues to do well and is breathing on her own after doctors performed a tracheotomy on her on Saturday, University Medical Center said Sunday in a press release.

Since being shot through the brain Jan. 8 at her "Congress on Your Corner" event at a northwest-side Safeway, Giffords has shown dramatic progress, doctors have said.

While surrounded by loved ones, she opened her right eye for the first time Wednesday after a visit from President Obama. She continues to open her eyes and is beginning to focus and track them, doctors have said.

Giffords also has been able to move her arms and legs.

Two other people injured in the incident remain in the hospital in good condition.
