The Salvation Army needs its Easter basket - preferably stuffed with pre-cooked hams, eggs and pastries.

The Salvation Army will throw its first Community Easter Breakfast for the needy Sunday, but to do so it needs more than 100 pre-cooked hams, 100 dozen eggs and 600 assorted pastries and rolls.

Donations have been scarce, officials said.

"We're not seeing the small donations come through the door," said Tamara McElwee, public relations director for the Salvation Army.

McElwee has approached local businesses about holding food drives to support the breakfast, she said.

"The community is always really generous," she said. "We need to let them know because this is the first time we are doing the event."

If donations fall short, the Salvation Army may take funds from other programs to buy food for the event, McElwee said.

Additional donations of 10 gallons of milk, orange juice, salt and pepper and butter also are needed for the breakfast.

The charity plans to feed more than 500 people Sunday at the Salvation Army's Hospitality House, 1021 N. 11th Ave.

Sunday's menu of scrambled eggs, ham, hash brown potatoes, pastries and beverages is scheduled to be served from 9 to 11 a.m. Easter service will start at 11 a.m. for those interested.

Easter baskets donated by Walgreens will be provided to children and an Easter service will follow the breakfast.
