1871: Maricopa County is created by carving 5.4 million acres out of Arizona's original four counties: Pima, Yuma, Mohave and Yavapai.
1920: The fourth Arizona Legislature holds a one-day special session and ratifies the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, establishing women’s suffrage.
1956: Swiss-American architect Josias Joesler — who designed St. Phillip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, the Arizona History Museum on Park Ave., and the Ghost Ranch Lodge among many other Tucson landmarks — dies.
