Jason Davis, a Master's student at the University of Arizona studying science journalism, has produced a video, "Defending the Dark," about light pollution in Arizona.
Tucson has one of the most progressive lighting ordinances in the country, yet nighttime lights here are strong enough here to wash out the Milky Way, a band of starlight emanating from billions of stars in our own galaxy.
Bright skies threaten astronomical research, which contributes to Arizona's $250 million annual space science economy. As Davis began investigating how light pollution affects astronomy, he discovered it compromises safety, wastes energy, threatens wildlife and may even impact human health.
