The National Republican Congressional Committee is pouring it on at the end of the campaign to try to help Jonathan Paton defeat Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in Congressional District 1.
The NRCC reported this weekend that it has spent $565,000 more on media buys against Kirkpatrick. That brings the group's total spending in the race beyond $2.2 million. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has spent about $1.5 million in the race.
Total independent expenditures in the race have now topped $5 million.
Although the NRCC's filing doesn't specify where its most recent spending went, the group is up with a new, anti-Kirkpatrick ad, in which it labels Kirkpatrick's campaign "shameful."
Via Twitter, Kirkpatrick spokeswoman Jennifer Johnson said "What's truly shameful is NRCC using footage of Ann's dad in their attack on his daughter."
Kirkpatrick's campaign had some good news this morning, when the Arizona Daily Sun endorsed her.
"You wouldn't know it by all those screaming fliers in your mailbox, but there's actually a moderate running for Congress this year in Arizona," the paper's editorial board wrote. "She is Ann Kirkpatrick."
The Sun's endorsement of Kirkpatrick follows endorsements of Paton by the Arizona Republic and Arizona Daily Star.
Congressional District 1 covers 55,000 square miles, or about half of Arizona. It includes Marana, Oro Valley, most of Pinal County, most of eastern Arizona, the Navajo Reservation, Flagstaff, Sedona and most of northern Arizona.
