Even in the last days of voting, Arizona's first congressional district continues to draw outside spending by the million.
On Oct. 31 alone, outside groups reported to the Federal Election Commission spending $1.2 million on the tight race in the state's biggest district.
That brings total spending on the race by outside groups to $6.5 million.
Most of the last couple of days' spending came from Democrat-supporting outside groups, which put $656,000 toward a last-minute push to help Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in her race against Republican Jonathan Paton.
But the American Future Fund, which supports Republicans, also reported dropping a cool half million on this ad, portraying Paton as a politician who can work with others, unlike Kirkpatrick.
Most of the pro-Democratic spending came from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which spent $518,049 Tuesday on what it referred to as a "media buy" against Paton. DCCC spokesmen did not immediately return an email requesting more information on the spending.
Emily's List and the House Majority PAC also combined to put about $124,000 toward this ad. It attacks Paton for votes related to women's health.
Congressional District 1 is a 55,000 square mile that covers half of Arizona, from Marana and Oro Valley, across Pinal County and most of Eastern Arizona, the Navajo Nation and most of Northern Arizona.
The push by supporters of Kirkpatrick follows a similar rash of spending in the previous days by the National Republican Congressional Committee in support of Paton.
