A man convicted of aggravated assault was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Monday.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Jane Eikleberry sentenced Gustav Ray Bland after his conviction on two counts of aggravated assault.
Bland originally faced trial for the April 2012 shooting of Michael Scotto. He was acquitted of attempted first-degree murder and the lesser offense of attempted second-degree murder.
Bland had argued his actions were in self-defense, having been involved in an argument at Scotto’s house with the victim and his sons.
Bland pulled a gun on Scotto, shooting him in the stomach.
Scotto said at the sentencing he’s had numerous surgeries as a result of the gunshot. In addition, he said, he’s permanently disabled and unable to work.
Bland apologized for the incident.
“I wish none of it had ever happened,” he said.
Eikleberry said she was incredulous at Bland’s claims of self-defense.
“I can’t see how shooting an unarmed man in his house in response to being slugged is self-defense,” she said.
