A pregnant woman suffered life-threatening injuries and her unborn baby died in a mid-afternoon crash Friday.
The 27-year-old woman, who was “late in her pregnancy,” was driving south on East Lumber Street near South Old Nogales Highway and Interstate 19 when she was hit, said Deputy Tracy Suitt, a spokesman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Hers was one of three vehicles involved in the crash.
The chain of collisions began just after 3 p.m. when a northbound pickup truck veered into the southbound lane after colliding with a northbound vehicle that was turning left onto Lumber Road, Suitt said.
The truck then collided head-on with the passenger car driven by the pregnant woman.
“She was extricated from the vehicle and flown to a trauma center with life threatening injuries. The baby was pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital,” Suitt said.
The driver of the pick-up truck was not injured.
Neither speed nor alcohol seem to be factors, Suitt said.
