SUN CITY, Ariz. — A 76-year-old Sun City man is in jail after being arrested in the shooting death of his 73-year-old wife at their home, a case being called a possible mercy killing.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials say they received a 911 call Wednesday morning and that responding deputies found Earlene Rudolph dead with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.

Sgt. Brandon Jones says initial indications are that it was a mercy killing. He cites what Howard Rudolph said about his wife being ill and what he wrote in a note found with a gun at the home.

An 86-year-old Sun City man was sentenced to probation in March for fatally shooting his ailing wife last November.
