An elderly St. David woman who disappeared last month was found dead Saturday in the desert west of Picacho.
Mary Black, 86, left her home Nov. 24 in a white 1991 Ford Explorer. Black, who had dementia, hadn’t driven in at least a decade.
The SUV was found by a hunter at about 9 a.m. Nov. 30 southwest of Picacho Peak.
Search and rescue teams from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department were sent to the area but failed to find Black.
On Saturday, searchers from Cochise, Pinal and Pima counties returned to the area south of Arizona City to continue searching. Black’s body was found in a brushy area, about a mile from where her SUV was found, Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, said.
An autopsy will be conducted by the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office, she said.
It could take a couple of weeks to combine all of the information and determine what happened to Black, Capas said.
Black “frequently went to the vehicle and sat inside without attempting to leave the area,” Capas said early in the search. “On one other occasion, Mary Black did take the vehicle and was located a short distance away in the parking lot of a convenience store.”
