A teen tried to smuggle $36,000 in heroin into the U.S. Thursday by hiding the drugs in the soles of his sneakers.

Luis Humberto Hernandez-Romero, 19, was waiting in his Nissan sedan to cross through the San Luis port-of-entry into the U.S. when Customs and Border Protection officers pulled him aside for further inspection, a Department of Homeland Security press release said.

After a CBP narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs inside of the vehicle, officers located nearly $36,000 worth of heroin inside of Hernandez’ sneakers.”

The drugs and vehicle were seized. Hernandez-Romero was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
