A man died this morning after he was shot by a Tucson Police officer at a south side apartment complex, police said.

Tucson Police responded to the Valencia Gardens apartments, 190 W. Valencia Road, just before 7:30 a.m. after a 911 caller said a man in a wheelchair tried to shoot him, said Sgt. Chris Widmer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.

When police arrived at the apartment complex, they encountered a man in a wheelchair who matched the description given by the 911 caller, Widmer said.

Police officers pulled their guns and ordered the man to put his hands up.

The man pulled a gun, prompting an officer to shoot him.

Police did not say whether the man aimed his gun at the officer.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives and internal affairs officers are investigating the shooting.
