I've lived in Tucson for almost 10 years and I am still amazed to learn about all the different kinds of people who live here. A couple of weeks ago I spent the morning with Barney Rael. He collects and restores retro micro cars of the 1950's, 60's and 70's. Rael says he started his hobby in 1985. Parts are now easier to come by due to the Internet. He says he buys some cars for their parts and others to fix up. "You pick the best body and move your mechanicals to it," he says.
I went for a spin in this 1957 BMW Isetta 300 after Barney tinkered with the engine and did a test drive. It's a small space and but a fun ride.
You can see more photos and read about Barney in tomorrow's Caliente section.
