Alex Kate Halvey won first place at the the 76th American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program competition. Her sister, Delaney Halvey, placed second. Both students attend Pusch Ridge Christian Academy.
The sisters competed in the Post level of the competition, which required contestants to deliver a memorized 8-to-10-minute talk on the U.S. Constitution. The sisters will both compete at a district competition Feb. 16.
In a different speech competition, Mountain View High School's Alyssa Kayfes won first place at the Dove Mountain Rotary Club's annual Four-Way Test speech contest.
Kayfes spoke about how the Rotary International statement of values would have went against the Hollywood Blacklist, which made life difficult for suspected communist film industry workers in the 1950s. She won a check for $100 and will compete for a berth in the Rotary District 5500 speech contest.
