The Marana Police Department held its first awards ceremony March 6, handing out distinctions to top performers.
* Winners of Lifesaving Awards were officers Hayden Mosher, William Dittiger and Robert Derfus, who on Feb. 7, 2012 rescued a frantic teen who was dealing with psychological issues and jumped out of a car and was nearly hit by a train. Also picking up the award were officers Ray Kennedy and John Pathammavongm, who on Feb. 19, 2012 stopped a man from strangling his wife.
* Herb Jones was named Volunteer of the Year, assisting officers with patrols and volunteering 3,550 hours since 2005.
* Tom Mooney was Civilian Employee of the Year. He supervises the Crime Scene Unit and mentored officers. He helped crack the case of a previously unsolved homicide that occurred in November 1987.
* Derfus was also named Officer of the Year. In addition to the rescue mentioned above, he also received the honor for his hand in removing about $500,000 of narcotics from the street between 2010 and 2011. He also confronted dangerous bank robbery suspects in December 2010.
