A $52 million hospital with an emergency room will be built in Green Valley and is expected to open in 2014, officials with Tucson Medical Center say.

TMC said today that it has entered a “memorandum of understanding” to develop and operate the new hospital with Scottsdale-based McDowell Enterprises.

Though TMC is non-profit, the new Green Valley hospital will be for-profit. TMC officials say it’s too early in the process to know how much money they will invest in building the hospital.

The hospital will give Green Valley and nearby Sahuarita residents their first emergency room. Residents must now travel 30 miles when they have a medical emergency.
